Our History

Our family run swim school was started by Bob (Owner) back in 2007, with just 4 children! Bob’s passion for swimming started at a young age, learning to swim with his own father who helped out with local community swimming.

Bob’s an ASA* Level 2 qualified swimming teacher. And due to his vast experience and love for swimming he is also an STA* Tutor – so basically, he trains others to teach this incredible and important life skill.

Even though our numbers have grown since it all began, one thing that’s still evident today is Bob and the team’s passionate and inspiring approach to helping little ones make their own wonderful waves. They look forward to seeing you poolside!

Our Difference

To focus in on the individual needs of the child to ensure we build their confidence and ability in the pool, whilst at the same time making sure that they’re having a great time learning to swim! We understand the importance of building relationships with both parents and children and are genuinely committed to each child’s progression and development.

Our Team

Here at Making Waves we don’t just employ instructors for their qualifications and experience but we look for those who are passionate about swimming and the vital role it plays in a child’s life. This ensures our little swimmers find lessons not only safe and rewarding but fun too!

All instructors are required to hold the latest teaching qualifications, valid lifesaving certificates and have DBS checks.

An outstanding swimming school – individualised, caring and professional. The team encourage the children at all times, keeping them motivated.

Max and Olivia love the lessons so much! Last week Max was swimming on his own without armbands! We are all pleased with the quality of the lessons and happy atmosphere.

Karen and Eamon Quail

Both kids have benefited from your classes, their confidence has soared in all areas of their lives and I put this down to the encouragement and sense of accomplishment they get from swimming.

Kerry and Dan Haycocks
Making Waves offers a very nurturing environment for children to learn to swim and improve their technique.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some of our frequently asked questions. If your question isn’t answered please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Do you operate a badge scheme?2022-02-22T17:33:03+00:00

Yes as we believe that all Making Waves children should be rewarded for the big effort they put into their swimming lessons. This is why we follow the ASA Learn to Swim Programme which is a great scheme to clearly monitor the development of each child whilst at the same time providing incentives and rewards to the young swimmers. It comprises of several stages (which are awarded with badges and certificates). For more detail on this click here.

Can I come along to see what you do?2022-02-22T17:34:44+00:00

What can I do to get my baby/small child ready for lessons?2019-11-25T16:11:11+00:00

A really easy way to get your little ones ready for swimming lessons can be through some everyday bath time fun. Using a little watering can and sprinkling it over your child’s head is a good way to get them used to the splashes in the pool environment. Another excellent way to get them comfortable with water being on their faces is to practice to blowing a few bubbles in the bath water through their nose or mouth. You can demonstrate first and they will soon follow and start having fun too! Family trips to the swimming pool are also great for getting the children accustomed to the swimming pool environment so they can be comfortable in their surroundings on their first day.

What if my child is ill will we be able to reschedule a session?2019-11-25T16:10:47+00:00

We are unable to offer replacement lessons for minor illness, however, should your child have a prolonged/contagious illness or as often happens a limb is broken, we are happy to offer a credit for missed lessons which can be used for the next term.

How do I pay?2022-02-22T17:38:42+00:00

We use direct debits powered by GoCardless. Find out more about GoCardless here.

How much are the lessons and do I need to pay in advance?2019-11-25T16:09:20+00:00

At Making Waves the first lesson (our assessment) is always free. At this we invite you to come along so can meet you and assess your little one in the pool to make sure we get the right class for them. After the assessment, your child will be allocated a class and the payment request (for the term/part term dependent on joining dates) will follow. Please note lesson rates vary dependent on the pool venue.

Can I watch their lesson from the poolside?2019-11-25T16:08:26+00:00

This depends on each venue’s facilities. Please check your venue page.

Do I need to get in the pool with my child?2019-11-25T16:07:49+00:00

If your child is under the age of 3 then we may request you get into the pool with them – this is something we will assess prior to booking. If your child is 3yrs+ then we don’t require parents in the pool as our instructors are in there with them every stroke of the way!

What age do you take children from?2022-02-22T17:37:28+00:00

At Making Waves we are really enthusiastic about getting children swimming from an early age. Swimming is a very important skill to have and at the same time, it provides a great way to keep fit and have lots of fun too! At some of our venues we’re currently taking children from 18mths old.

What are the term dates and how long is a term?2019-11-25T16:06:39+00:00

We have 4 terms each made up of 12 weeks which means we run swimming lessons 48 weeks of the year without a summer break. This makes us different from other swim schools because we provide children with that important continuity which they need for developing their ability in the pool.

Where are your lessons held?2022-02-22T17:36:32+00:00

We run lessons across a range of pools in Cheshire, Shropshire, North Wales and more recently Reading. Click here to find out more about our venues. We also do home visits and run private one2one lessons for customers’ children in the comfort of their own pool.
